As an alternative reasonable cookbook, I'd suggest Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything [$15]. It's hipper and more practical than The Joy of Cooking, yet incredibly thorough and easy to follow with an emphasis on simplicity and practicality. Bittman writes the Minimalist food column for the New York Times.
