Let's not forget a reasonable sharpener for a reasonable knife! Some people are able to use a sharpening steel, handheld, which is inexpensive and space-efficient. I got what seems to be a reasonable sharpener at Costco for like $50, something like <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Chefs-Choice-300W-Diamond-Sharpener/dp/B00005QEZS/?tag=reasogoods0b-20" rel="nofollow">one of these</a>. It does a good job, and it's easier than taking it to the butcher's counter to get them sharpened. Having a good chef’s knife like this pays dividends in the kitchen. Let’s not forget a reasonable sharpener for a reasonable knife!
